Sun Acquired MySql

This can be the most shocking news for me in the beginning of this year. Sun acquired Mysql with $ 1B price. As referenced from http://www.mysql.com/news-and-events/sun-to-acquire-mysql.html, on Januari 16, 2008 Sun Microsystems, inc announced it’s intention to acquire MySql, the developer of the world’s fastest growing open source database with approximately $ 1B. After the completion of the transaction, MySql will be integrated into Sun and the CEO of MySql will join Sun’s executive team. Sun will pay approximately $ 800 million for the stock and $ 200 million in options. For the complete article click the link referred above.

My Comment:

The integration of Sun and MySql will surely bring both to the next level. On the top of that i sure hope that mysql will stay open source

Life can be full of shocking news, both good and bad, let’s just hope something good would eventually came out of the deal, as Sun’s involvement with Open Source isn’t new, their past acquaintance includes releasing Java as GPL which was broadly welcomed, maintaining free Solaris (which I never use or even download) and the providing the popular IDE NetBeats. Of course there’s lot other things to mention, but the three above were much more notable for me, hehe.

Not sure, throwing $ 1B for it and let it stay open source? Really hope so..
